The Pattern

Employee problems don't start expensive.
They get expensive at the decision.

Payroll runs. Files exist. But when the hard call arrives — a termination, a complaint, a leave question — it lands on someone without senior HR backup.

  • 1

The file doesn't back the decision

Leadership knows exactly who the problem is. The documentation proves attendance and nothing else. The next contested termination is judged on that file.

  • 2

The wrong person carries the risk

Your office manager keeps HR moving — and quietly carries decisions they were never hired, trained, or authorized to make alone.

  • 3

    Issues wait until they're emergencies

Managers avoid the hard conversation until leadership wants to jump straight to termination — the most expensive moment to ask for advice.

The Guardrail

Senior judgment before the decision — not cleanup after it

A monthly advisory lane, delivered personally by Dr. Thomas W. Faulkner. Here's how a matter actually moves:

Senior HR professional reviewing documentation in a personnel file Documentation that holds — before you act, not after
  • 1

    Bring the decision early

Your designated contacts (up to three) call or email before acting — a conduct issue, a documentation question, a termination you're weighing.

  • 2

    Get senior judgment fast

Next-business-day response on standard matters; same-day triage for urgent, high-risk ones. Sequence, documentation, consistency, risk — in plain language.

  • 3

Decide with a file that holds

You keep decision authority. Your documentation, process, and story get stronger with every matter — plus a quarterly risk review with written priorities.

Honest Scope

What the Guardrail is — and what it isn't

Clear boundaries are why the price can be published. Read both columns before you submit; it saves us both a call.

Included every month

  • Priority phone + email advisory for up to 3 contacts
  • Employee relations, conduct & performance guidance
  • Corrective action & documentation guidance
  • Leave, compliance & policy interpretation on live decisions
  • Focused review of documents tied to active matters
  • Termination planning inside active advisory matters
  • Quarterly HR risk review with written action priorities

Ordinary advisory use never generates surprise hourly overages.

Not this — quoted separately when needed

  • Payroll, benefits, or day-to-day HR administration
  • Workplace investigations & formal fact-finding
  • Handbook rewrites & policy drafting projects
  • Legal advice, representation, or attorney work product
  • Unlimited everything for everyone

Need those? They exist as scoped projects — the fit call routes you honestly, even if that means not the Guardrail.

Who Answers The Phone

Dr. Thomas W. Faulkner

SPHR · Doctorate, Organizational Leadership · Lean Six Sigma Black Belt · 15+ years HR leadership

Every Guardrail client works directly with me. No account managers, no junior "HR help desk," no ticket queue. When your supervisor is standing in your doorway with a problem, you get the same senior judgment a Fortune-level HR executive would give — sized and priced for a Texas employer your size.

I keep the roster deliberately small enough to answer the phone. When capacity is full, the fit check says so and you go on the wait list — that's the trade for senior-only delivery.

From The Case Files

A Texas public-sector employer lost its licensed operators in one short window — a compliance crisis with public-health stakes. With senior HR structure behind supervision, hiring, and development, the result was 60%+ lower turnover in critical roles, 45% lower overtime cost, and zero regulatory findings through the entire recovery.

Real engagement, anonymized. The lesson: the fix is rarely heroics — it's senior judgment applied before each decision, consistently.

Before You Submit

The questions everyone asks

Am I committing to anything by submitting?
No. The fit check starts a conversation, not a contract. You get one direct reply from Dr. Faulkner — a straight answer on whether the Guardrail fits, at your exact fee. If it doesn't fit, you'll be told that too.
We're under 25 (or over 87) employees. Pointless?
Not pointless — different answer. Smaller organizations are usually routed to HR Advisory Access at $20 per employee ($1,000 minimum). Above 87, Guardrail pricing deliberately stops and a broader scope is compared, so you never pay more for a narrower service. The form handles the routing automatically.
Is this legal advice?
No — it's senior HR consulting: process, documentation, sequence, consistency, and operating judgment. When a matter needs an attorney, you'll be told plainly and your counsel gets a cleaner file to work with.
How fast do you actually respond?
Standard advisory matters: next business day. Urgent, high-risk matters: same-day triage when available. Fit-check submissions: same business day, Mon–Fri. These standards are written into the service schedule, not just this page.
What happens in the first 30 days?
Kickoff call with your designated contacts, a short document review that produces a private baseline read on your risk, and — usually by week two — the first observation you didn't ask for. That's what having a guardrail feels like.
Why is pricing per employee?
Because the workload a retainer protects scales with the workforce behind it. You see the same published rate and minimum every other client sees — the fee tracks your headcount, reviewed quarterly, never renegotiated in a dark room.

Know your number. Then decide.

30 seconds to your exact fee. Same-business-day answer on fit. The worst case is a straight "not a fit" from someone who told you the price up front.
